How much do pop stars really earn? It may be less than you think

After Hannah from S Club revealed she was paid £150k a year in the band we did some digging to find out how much dollar pop stars really earn

How much do Lily Allen, Beyonce, Sam Smith and Hannah Spearitt make?
According to Jessie J it's not about the money, money, money... but how much bl-bling-bl-bling can pop stars buy for their ch-ch-ching ch-ching?
Some pop stars are obviously raking it in. Bieber and Madonna may make enough money to light fags with million pound notes, but that's not true for everybody.
Sam Smith has banked more than £12m and Adele has about £50m in the bank.
Each member of One Direction has approximately £25m in their piggy banks - a far cry from the £150k a year Hannah Spearritt made in S Club.
Ed Sheeran revealed he makes about £15,000 a day before tax.

But Lily Allen revealed how much she made for her John Lewis ad.
She said: "Everyone assumes I made millions from the John Lewis ad. I probably made £8,000."
Now pop stars don't sell as many physical records any more they have to get their money from other means.
Lily said: “There are two levels to it. There are the GQ Awards, but also the snobby launches of a new water at Claridge’s. Pointless stuff. And we all turn up because we get paid to be there."
When asked how much they pay she replied: “Depends. From £2.5k to £100k? Now that people don’t buy music we have to find other revenues. It’s not something I’ve really been offered. But I might."

Oh my god I can't believe it
In 2013 the sales of all types of albums and singles totaled $1.77 billion in the UK, down 0.5 per cent on the year before and down 7 per cent over three years.
Beyoncé, complained about this on a song signing: “Soul not for sale / Probably won’t make no money off this / Oh well.”
According to PRS for Music, the industry association that helps collect royalty payments, British writers and artists earned $1.09 billion from royalties.

But on top of that, they earned $178 million in 2012 from “ancillary brand revenues” - for example their own perfumes like Taylor Swift.
Rolling Stone magazine listed 9 ways artists actually make their money these days:
  1. T-shirts and merch
  2. Movie and TV licensing
  3. Fashion lines
  4. Perfume
  5. Start-up investing
  6. Kickstarter
  7. YouTube
  8. Instant concert recording
  9. Talk show band
But not everybody is as flush as Taylor Swift.
X Factor finalist Lauren Murray told Mirror Celeb she couldn't even afford to buy underwear with the allowance the show pays.
She said: "I couldn’t even buy a pair of knickers right now if I wanted to.
“For two months I haven’t been earning anything. You’re given an allowance but it’s not much. It’s pocket money, like my grandad would give me. It’s less than £50 a week.”
Lauren’s performance of Ariana Grande’s One Last Time got to number nine in the iTunes chart – but the singer insists all the proceeds go to X Factor .
She tells us: “I don’t get money for the songs I sang on the show going in iTunes, X Factor does.”
However the winner of the show does get a £1m record deal - but this doesn't mean the artist gets to bank £1m - instead that's the money that gets invested in their first album which covers admin and staffing costs.
